Utility Locators Top 10 Hazards | Locator Safety Awareness
Damage Prevention Professional magazine and the National Utility Locating Contractors Association (NULCA) have teamed up to create the first Locator Safety Awareness Week (LSAW). This inaugural event is June 22-28, 2014, and has been created to support and promote the safety of our utility line locators who often are prone to facing dangerous situations every day.

Utility Locators
Utility locators are individuals who locate and mark utilities for the one-call systems. Locators work for utility companies, private-locate companies, and even engineering firms.
The goal of Locator Safety Awareness Week
The target set for Locator Safety Awareness week is to help support locators by encouraging them, and their employers, to work more safely. Locators routinely work in hazardous areas, like busy intersections, near high-speed highways, or even in confined spaces. They also regularly face threats associated with the weather, topography hazards, and activity required to do the job. Here is a list of the top 10 safety hazards locators often encounter:
- Working in confined spaces
- Threats to the eyes
- Climate and weather hazards
- Dog bites
- Punctures and injury to feet
- Poison ivy and other skin threats
- Insect bites and stings
- Walking, lifting, bending and squatting

This is a grassroots movement led by two organizations, the National Utility Locating Contractors Association and Damage Prevention Professional magazine. How can you help? Like the call 811 before you dig program, much of its promotion will be driven by word of mouth.
